3 tanker om “Ketelsen, Friedrich (1896-1917)”

  1. Hello,

I live in England, and I am a watch collector. I own a silver wristwatch from the first world war, which has the inscription “oblt Von stachelsky” on the back. Oberleutnant Gerhard von Stachelsky was the commander of the Gotha bomber that was piloted by Friedrich Ketelsen when Ketelsen was killed of the coast of England in Dec 1917. I am researching the incident and was wondering if anyone on this site could help me. I have some local reports of the incident in which Ketelsen died that might add some more detail to your page on him.

    Hallo,

  2. Hello, Tim Wilson !
Thanks for drawing attention to F. Ketelsen and his story, being part of the The First Blitz, Bombing London in the First World War.

I switch to Danish. An English version underneath.

    https://denstorekrig1914-1918.dk/26-maj-1917-ugens-kampe-fra-the-great-war/
Youtube-kanalen ‘The Great War’: “German Bombers Over Britain”

To brødre i uniform. Pastorindeenke Alwine Ketelsens to sønner. December 1915.”

“The pilot, Friedrich Ketelsen, decided that he had to turn around and try to land. In fact he ditched just off Dover at 2100. Ketelsen himself was drowned and the crew of the armed trawler Highlander captured the navigator and gunner.”

    As told at

YouTube-canal ‘The Great War’: “German Bombers Over Britain”
German Gotha bombers attacked targets in England – first time in world history.

In first attack May 25, 1917, 21 planes reached England, but with fog over London the Channel port Folkestone was affected / hit. Only (first time) on June 13 London was hit, and 162 people were killed.

The full name of Friedrich Ketelsen apparently was Friedrich Heinrich Ketelsen. His brother Georg Ketelsen (at the picture at this individual page above) was named Lorenz Georg Otto Ketelsen, he became a pastor, died 1941 i Flensborg. With reference to MyHeritage.dk, where also stated that Friedrich was a Schmied / smith.

The picture with the two brothers can also be seen at https://arkiv.dk/vis/1050506
“Lieutenant Ketelsen. Two brothers in uniform. The two sons of Alwine Ketelsen, widow of a pastor.”
