My great grandfather was Peter Andresen Schmidt, the older brother to Nis and Marius Christian who both died in the Great War.
Peter Andresen led also an interesting life. I understand he worked for a bank in the US and as part of his work he had to travel to a lot of places, including Mexico (where he met my great grandmother, Maria Antonieta Rodriguez) and to Haiti.
Peter and Ma Antonieta had three children in Mexico: Octavio, Elsbeth (in honor of his mother -Elsabeth) and Aneken (in honor of his sister).
My grandmother was Elsbeth Andresen (the registar in Mexico thought that Andresen -not Schmidt- was Peter’s last name and that’s why we always thought our last name was Andresen!!), who would tell us some stories of her uncles who fought and died in the war. To me, as a boy growing up in the 80’s in Mexico City, these stories seemed so wild and far off. I regret not being old enough to ask her more.
If I remember properly, Peter died in the 1940’s. The Mexican branch of the family tried to reconnect with the “Andresens” in Denmark and now I understand why we couldn’t. Our real last name is not “Andresen” but Schmidt! If there is any Schmidt from this family branch out there reading this, please reach out!!!
