'It's incredible' - New Zealand war hero Bert Hansen's handwritten manuscript from WWI found.
New Zealand Herald, 10 Apr, 2021.

"Kath and Stan Hansen have discovered a stash of letters and documents belonging to Stan's father Bert, who was a Kiwi war hero from WWI.
Stan Hansen waited 80 years to unclasp the brown suitcase stowed at the top of his parent's wardrobe that guarded the written history of his father's war years.
The memories recorded of veteran Bert Hansen's seven-month ordeal as a German prisoner in Belgium during World War I were too painful to ever pass his lips while alive."

"After Bert Hansen's death in 1951 at the age of 53, the suitcase entered the possession of his youngest son, Arthur, who for his own reasons kept the contents confidential."
"With Arthur's death in January this year, the brown suitcase was finally accessible to Stan and his remaining older sister."

"Inside was a 109-page handwritten manuscript detailing his father's capture at age 22 in the northeast of France, in Meteren on April 16, 1918, during the German Spring Offensive.
Bert was able to escape twice from the prison hospital he was in and was sheltered by the Belgian underground resistance until the Armistice took effect on November 11, 1918."
"Stan's daughter Sue says he could barely stand from shock when the suitcase was finally opened in their Point Chevalier home."

Hvorfra:
"New Zealander Escapes Brutal German Captivity in WW1. Northern Advocate 8/12/2012"
(Bemærk årstallet 2012. Historien er ikke ny !)

"Bert Hansen, was born on 24th January 1896, and grew up in the small Northland coastal settlement of Ngunguru."
....
"Hansen soon became ill with severe influenza. Fortunately for him, one of the German guards was also named Hansen, and he arranged to have Bert Hansen transferred to a POW military hospital in the church of St Pierre in Leuze. Without this help, Hansen would have most likely died."
....
"By the end of November, Hansen had made his way to Dover where he was hospitalised with debility. Hansen was discharged from the Army in 1919, and, after spending four years in France studying the baking trade, returned to New Zealand to continue his work in the baking industry."

Google definerer cenotaph som "a monument to someone buried elsewhere, especially one commemorating people who died in a war.")

("The Cenotaph was designed by Edwin Lutyens as a secular memorial because the war dead were from a dizzying array of peoples, nations and creeds."

"The cenotaph in Whitehall influenced the design of many other war memorials in Britain and in the British sectors of the Western Front, as well as those in other Commonwealth nations. Lutyens' cenotaph was chosen as a deliberately secular monument".

One family, 42 soldiers - a history of service
24 Apr, 2013
"He was gassed as was his brother, and it gets into your lungs. All I remember of my father is he had this cough ... he'd just cough, cough, cough." (Cough = hoste).
"Finding him describe in his own words the seven-month cycle of capture, escape, capture and escape in an article he'd had published in 1919 was priceless."
"The article's title was German Ill-Treatment - Experience of a Plucky Prisoner of War."
